Too High degree of self-esteem is termed as overconfidence and is not good for a person and his social relations while a low degree of self-esteem can ruin the mental and physical state of the person. Thus we need to strike a balance and value ourselves and react accordingly.

What is self-esteem?

Smith and Mackie (2007) defined it by saying “The self-concept is what we think about the self; self-esteem is the positive or negative evaluations of the self, as in how we feel about it.”

Self-esteem is a feeling of what one feels. It is all about how much a person values, appreciates, prizes like him or her. What attitude you keep towards yourself is termed self-esteem. It may be favourable or unfavourable. Moreover, this measure of self-esteem is not fixed. It keeps on changing depending upon the situation and can be improved with time.

All people live with different degrees of self-esteem i.e. the weightage they give to themselves and their thoughts. Some have very high self-esteem whereas others do not give much heed to their self-respect and are easily moved by other thoughts.

Why is self-esteem so important?

Self-respect is the necessary motivation one needs to move further and live a happy and satisfying life. Too much self-esteem is often linked with personality disorders while too less self -esteem can lead to depression. Thus self-esteem is very important but it must be valued aptly and in the right amount.

We often do and think as we see. Some traits come from our childhood whereas others are influenced by the teachings of our mentors. How they treat us becomes our mentality. If they scold, we start valuing ourselves low whereas if they appreciate, we have confidence and generate self-esteem.

The degree of self-worth you estimate for yourself largely depends on how the people around you treat you. Therefore living with people of good and happy attitude. Choose friends who help you feel better about yourself and motivate you.

Try thinking positive and evaluate yourself on the bright side of life. Thinking of a man largely defines his behaviour. By feeling grateful and content one can improve his self-confidence. This can be achieved by meditation practice etc.

Work on your body

The health condition and fitness also affect the thinking of a person. Getting involved with yoga, exercises and taking a balanced diet can lead you toward fitness and feel active and energetic the whole day. Your self-confidence will get a boost when you know that you are looking fit and people are admiring you.

Focus on what goes well

One must look towards the positive side of life. Also, one must focus on the good things and stop talking about the problems and the negative things. In short, be happy for the good and ignore the rest. Stop thinking about what’s wrong. Correct your thoughts as soon as you start complaining about yourself or the day and concentrate on what went well.

Give and help

Helping others is one of the best ways to boost your self-confidence. Being generous and kind with everyone gives you a feeling of satisfaction and helps you generate self-esteem. You start feeling delighted and high.
