Namaste, incredible souls! It’s Ritu Singal, your online life coach, here to share a deeply personal and profoundly impactful journey. Life, as we know, is rarely a smooth sail. It throws curveballs, challenges, and sometimes, even what feels like poison.
But what if I told you that within every challenge lies the seed of unparalleled growth, the potential for that very poison to transform into your most potent medicine? This is a story of resilience, unwavering spirit, and the power of turning setbacks into stepping stones, even when the world seems to be conspiring against you.
From Ashes to Success: My Journey of Resilience and Transformation
My journey into understanding this transformative power began in 2008 with an incident that shook our world to its core: a devastating fire at our factory. I remember the moment clearly. I was deep in discussion with our Director, Mr. Narang, when his phone beeped. His expression immediately shifted, eyes moist. “Oh, no!” he exclaimed, “There’s a fire in the factory. We must rush.”

It felt like the flames were everywhere, my prayers desperate, a raw plea for everything to be okay. I was scared, vulnerable against such a powerful force, but praying was my lifeline, my way of asking to make it through.
The next thing I heard was the fire had been doused. The following day, my team explained the cause: a leakage in an oil pipeline joint, dripping hot oil onto electrical wires, causing a spark to ignite a massive blaze. The continuous dripping could have spread the fire across two acres of pipeline, potentially exploding like a bomb and destroying not just our factory but neighboring buildings too. Miraculously, there were no casualties. This devastating fire, in an unexpected twist, helped us identify and rectify initial installation flaws in the factory. It was a wake-up call, a ‘poison’ that forced us to strengthen our foundations.
Just a few years later, in 2015, we faced an even greater trial. A much bigger fire erupted, spreading through a major portion of the plant. Yet, by some grace, it stopped just short of areas containing highly flammable chemicals, averting a total disaster. Despite some blasts in our R&D laboratory, no casualties occurred. We were spared the loss of highly expensive material worth crores, prepared for dispatch. Still, the material losses were immense.
In that thick smoke, with minimal visibility and breathing almost impossible, Sanjeev, a young man I had mentored, displayed exceptional presence of mind. He cut the connecting fabric in a machine, preventing the fire from spreading further. I was filled with appreciation for Sanjeev, whom I had treated like a son. His growth was remarkable, a testament to dedication and good online life coaching.
I rushed to the plant, where my team, faces smeared with soot and ashes, valiantly tried to save what they could. This fire was so devastating that 15 fire brigade tenders were called into service. The team was overwhelmed, feeling insecure amidst the disruption and uncertainty.
To boost their morale, I shared the story of Einstein’s lab fire, how he rebuilt it and turned the setback into an opportunity for new discoveries. Emotionally shattered but with an unyielding spirit, I told them, “It’s a reminder for all of us that setbacks are just unexpected turns on the way to success!”
A friend predicted it would take a minimum of three months to resume production. It felt like a Herculean task: gathering data, inventorying damaged parts, making a balance sheet of losses. Then came another blow: the insurance company was suspicious, a common issue given past frauds. This shattered me completely.
It felt like the universe was playing a cruel joke, pushing me back to square one. I was devastated, scared, and unsure, but deep down, I knew I couldn’t give up. I had come too far. With grit and determination, I began rebuilding. We re-evaluated our safety protocols, learning from the fires to safeguard employees and the business.
My law degrees and gold medals hadn’t taught me this “worldly wisdom.” The police even filed an FIR against us, placing the onus on us to prove our innocence. I became a robot, working late into the night at the factory, forgetting to eat, drink, or even smile. Thanks to Inayat, who silently supported me through her own struggles with medical entrance exams, I pulled through.
In the midst of chaos, I made an urgent trip to China for spare parts, design rolls, and raw materials. I refused to lose any customers. Our reconstruction pace was unprecedented. By the time customers and competitors began offering condolence calls, we were back on track, albeit with minimal arrangements. Rising like a Phoenix from the ashes, we resumed production in just 10 days!
Amidst the devastation, we garnered the same sales as before, even making more profits. We secured a major, five-year agreement with a renowned healthcare company, and even delayed payments started pouring in. As Nichiren Daishonin wisely said, “No one can avoid problems, not even sages or worthies. And happiness is not the absence of problems.”

Resilience in Action: Turning Challenges into Opportunities
Life truly became a roller coaster, with one issue resolving only for another to emerge. In 2010, our director, Mr. Narang, informed me of a new government notification: a new tax on builders, amounting to about 2 crore rupees, even for old projects completed during Vikas’s lifetime. That figure haunted me.
My law degree wasn’t a complete waste. I delved into the amendment. I believe every entrepreneur should grasp the basics of law. Understanding the Act, I prepared to speak to the commissioner. Mr. Narang requested a meeting, but the commissioner brushed off meeting “the lady,” oblivious that I, the MD, was in the picture. My title needed more spotlight, perhaps a superhero cape for board meetings, I joked to myself, observing the deep-rooted patriarchy. I asked Mr. Narang to convey that his MD sought a meeting and to avoid the word ‘Madam.’ He was promptly in my office.
“Madam, as per the notification, you need to pay the dues,” he began.
“But Sir,” I countered, “the law cannot be made to work in retrospect. The law was notified much later than the date being considered for computing the dues.”
“Yeah, that’s true. The law, though ready, was notified quite late.”
“But then, sir, that’s a problem on the part of the government. We should not be made to pay for the government’s mistake.”
“You know, Madam, the dues have to be paid, but I’ll help you out with this,” he offered.
“Really? How?”
“See, I have four years left until my retirement. So at least till then, we can safely stash away your file somewhere so that you stay untouched. You can always pay up later if you need to.”
“But sir, what will the delay achieve?”
“Madam, I have calculated your liability. It’s almost two crores, counting all completed projects since the beginning. You can easily earn this amount, in fact, much more money in the next four years by not paying these two crores.” I was taken aback by his logic, confidence, and wisdom as an officer.
I stood, smiling. “We’ll do one thing, sir. We’ll swap our chairs and you can see for yourself how easy it is to make this kind of money.” He looked slightly embarrassed. “Madam, please sit… please.”
“Sir, this four-year postponement will do us no good. Even otherwise, I can go to a court and argue about the law being applied retrospectively and request for some relief by way of an installment plan for our dues. The court will happily grant me this relief. So I guess, having this thing postponed won’t serve any purpose; rather, I might incur penalty and interest on my liability,” I don’t know how I mustered the courage to say it.

“Yeah…yeah…” He seemed to understand I wasn’t an easy target. The matter was resolved; we only had to pay for future projects. When he left, Mr. Narang asked if I had bribed him. I gave him a look simply portraying, “What for?” As I stood there, looking at him with conviction, I sensed his disbelief, as if he’d been slapped.
He seemed to have given up on me, but something inside refused to back down. It felt like a force guiding me, a devoted disciple striving to please a mentor. Like Arjuna from The Mahabharata, my focus was laser-sharp, my aim unwavering. I knew I had to do what was right, and nothing could stop me.

These experiences taught me that life’s toughest moments are often our greatest teachers. They forge resilience, clarify purpose, and reveal strengths we never knew we possessed. Just as those fires led to stronger safety protocols and unprecedented growth, and facing down an unfair tax demand reinforced my integrity, your challenges can be your catalysts.
When faced with setbacks, it’s easy to get bogged down by negativity and self-doubt. However, resilience is key to overcoming obstacles and emerging stronger.
