Some time ago I conducted a little experiment where I asked 10 adults what they wanted from life. Someone said they wanted a high paying job. Another said that they wanted to buy a new car. So on and so forth.

Then I happened to ask the same question to a six-year old girl, and she said, “Oh! I want to be so, so happy!” I cannot tell you the way her eyes lit up when she said those words, grinning ear to ear. I couldn’t help but feel internally happy and warm too! 

I then went back to some of those adults and asked them why they wanted the things they wanted? And each one of them replied, “to be happy.” Do you realize what happened here?

Sometimes little children can remind us of the most basic things that we end up forgetting in the hustle-bustle of our lives. The kid knew, that all she really needed to be was happy, and all she needed to be happy was THE INTENTION to be happy. 

We forget that as adults. We think things can make us happy. But can they really? Believe me when I say this, there is no end to material wants.

As soon as you achieve one, you will start chasing the next one. And just like that, happiness will always be a distant dream. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Because it is true when they say that: 

Happiness is a choice. Moreover, it is a choice that you can make every day!

Today I am going to share with you a 30 day cheat sheet that you can use to train your mind to choose happiness every day. And believe me you will feel the positive shifts in your life from the first day itself. If you don’t believe me here is a small experiment.

SMILE! Right now, just smile! Think back to one of your fondest childhood memory and smile! All it takes is 12 muscles. But the minute you smile, even if it is a smile you purposely crafted, endorphins are released in your system.

Practice Gratitude: This may seem like such a basic thing to do. But do not underestimate the power of this simple practice. It has the calibre to really enhance our lives.

There is so much that happens in our lives on a daily basis, good and bad. However, we have become dispositioned to focus on the negatives. But if we simply shift our attention to even as less as three good things that have happened to us that day, we will be able to see how meaningful our life really is!

Here are some examples you can use as your guide to practicing gratitude.

  • Thank you clothes for keeping me warm today. Thank you Thank you Thank you.
  • You can come up with your own reasons for expressing gratitude as per your day. It can be for things, or experiences, or people around you.

Once you have gone through these 30 days, you will realise that Happiness is not an external factor. In fact, it is within you and in all the little things that you already have.
